About ShackComm
ShackComm is a free telephone network for licensed radio amateurs. Every member's extension is their callsign, and the network adds the things hams care about: nets, news bulletins, band conditions, weather alerts and links to AllStarLink. It's run by volunteers from the amateur radio community and isn't a commercial service.
Frequently asked questions
Who can join?
Anyone with a current FCC amateur radio license. Registration checks your callsign against the FCC license database and emails the address on file with the FCC. If the FCC has no email for you, you can ask the helpdesk to verify you another way.
What does it cost?
Nothing. ShackComm is free and run by volunteers.
What do I need?
A supported desk phone (Yealink, Fanvil, Grandstream, Poly, and some Cisco models), the free Linphone app on a phone or computer, or just a web browser with a headset. See the phone setup guide.
Can I call 911 or regular phone numbers?
No. ShackComm can't reach 911 or emergency services. Always keep a regular phone for emergencies. Calling regular phone numbers isn't available.
Is this amateur radio?
Calls between members are internet telephone calls, not radio transmissions. When you use the AllStarLink hub to talk through linked repeaters, you are transmitting on the air: you're the control operator for what you say and must follow the FCC rules and your license privileges.
Who can see my information?
Members see the directory (callsign, name, city and state), unless you choose to be unlisted. You can also hide your busy status. See the privacy page.
My license expired. What happens?
Accounts follow the FCC database: when a license is no longer active, the account is suspended until it's renewed.
I bought a used phone and it keeps going back to its old provider.
That's the manufacturer's zero-touch redirect. The phone setup guide explains how to get around it.
How do I get help or report a problem?
Open a request on the helpdesk. Volunteers from the community answer them.
